(ChattahBox) — An almost perfectly preserved baby woolly mammoth, which lumbered across the Earth during the last Ice Age, 1.8 million to 11,500 years ago, is to be the star of a mammoths-and-mastodons exhibition at Chicago’s Field Museum, due to open in March.  Lyuba who is 110 pounds and 51 inches long, was sucked to her death in a muddy river bed when just a month old and has remained “98 percent” preserved through 40 millennia buried in permafrost. She was discovered in May 2007 by a reindeer herder, traipsing through Russia’s remote Arctic Yamalo-Nenetsk region and named after his wife. Her body so well preserved traces of her mother’s milk remained in her belly, has been studied exhaustively in Russia and Japan, a process followed by National Geographic cameras and has provided researchers new windows into Ice Age life.  Daniel Fisher, a professor of geological sciences at the University of Michigan who is part of the international team studying the remains told reporters, “We had no idea from preserved skeletons and preserved carcasses that young mammoths had a discrete structure on the back of the head of brown fat cells.”  The hump acted as a furnace to help maintain body temperature in cold climate, which supports the theory that mammoths were born in the early spring. Lyuba’s intact DNA have some scientists picturing a future resurrection of the mammoth. The exhibition  at Chicago’s Field Museum, opens March 5, and will run through September 6, then embarks on a 10-city tour whose final stop is scheduled for the Natural History Museum of London in 2014.
