CBO Scores Baucus Health Reform Bill: Saves $81B Over 10 Years

October 7, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The Congressional Budget Office finally released its score of the Senate Finance Committee’s health reform bill, crafted by Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.). The bill was determined to not add to the federal deficit and would save the government $81 billion over 10 years.

Sen. Baucus delayed a vote on the health reform bill, until a CBO score was released.

The expansion of coverage will cost $518 billion in government subsidies, according to the CBO calculations. The cost would be partly offset by taxing high-cost insurance plans at $201 billion, trimming Medicare rates at $162 billion, and cutting subsidies to private insurance companies that provide Medicare at $117 billion.

The bill would cost $829 billion over a decade and cover 94 percent of the population.

The positive CBO score serves to keep the health reform process moving forward, but there still is much work ahead, as the next step involves merging the Senate Finance Committee’s bill with the House bill.

There is no date set yet on a Senate Finance Committee vote on the health care reform bill.
