Rep. Grayson: If Obama Eats a BLT, GOP ‘Would Try to Ban Bacon’

October 8, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Rep. Alan Grayson, the colorful Democratic Congressman from Florida, is making a name for himself as a sharp-tongued, no nonsense champion of health care reform. And today, on the floor of the House he made an impassioned plea to his fellow Democrats to stop worrying about what Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) wants and start thinking about what the American people want.

The Freshman Congressman from Florida also had a message to deliver to Republicans, urging the obstructionists to “get out of the way” of health care reform that Americans so desperately need and want.

Rep. Grayson raised eyebrows last month when he said on the floor of the House that Republicans “want you to die quickly if you get sick,” in reference to a Harvard study finding that nearly 50,000 people die every year in the U.S. from a lack of health insurance.

He refused to apologize and instead, apologized to “the dead.” “I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven’t voted sooner to end this holocaust in America,” said Grayson.

Today, Rep. Grayson remarked that there are people dying everyday from the lack of health insurance in this country, and he will not apologize for bringing that grim fact to the attention of the American people, because Americans don’t care about Republcans’ feelings:

“I will not apologize for a simple reason. America doesn’t care about your feelings. I violated no rules by calling this report to America’s attention. I think a lot of people didn’t know about it beforehand. But America does care about health care in America. And if you’re against it then get out of the way. Just get out of the way. You can lead. You can follow or you can get out of the way. And I’m telling you now to get out of the way. America understands that there is one party in the country in favor of health care reform. And one party that’s against it and they know why.”

Grayson then artfully described the Republicans’ wish for President Obama to fail and the American people be damned:

“They understand that if Barack Obama was somehow able to cure hunger in the world, the Republicans would blame him for overpopulation. They understand that if somehow Barack Obama could somehow bring about world peace, they would blame him for destroying the defense industry. In fact, they understand that if Barack Obama has a BLT sandwich tomorrow for lunch they would try and ban bacon. But that’s not what America wants.”

Grayson’s message to Democrats included the reminder that Sen. Olympia Snowe was not elected president. And that the American people don’t care who votes for health care, they just need and want it:

“We as a party have spent the last six months, the greatest minds of our party, dwelling on the question; the unbelievably consuming question, of how to get Olympia Snowe to vote for health care reform. I want to remind us all, Olympia Snowe was not elected president last year. Olympia Snowe has no veto power in the senate. Olympia Snowe represents a state with one half of one percent of America’s population.”

Thank God – finally someone who is telling the reality of the horrors of our the current state of this nation’s healthcare system. What is going on with the Democratic Party? Where is your backbone.

As a person who had been employed full-time yet had no health care insurance, I personally know the fear and worry that goes through the minds of the uninsured. I am very fortunate that I did not have minor children to worry about and am blessed to now have a job with decent healthcare benefits although the premiums are a little steep. It’s all well to jump on the Republicans’ side when you have good healthcare benefits but for those who don’t, try showing a little more compassion. But, Alan Grayson is so right. Whether it is healthcare, defense of this nation or how to clip a hangnail, the Republicans would denounce any solution President Obama had.

Now, if only we could get Grayson and Barney Frank some more time on the mic, maybe plain talking and a modicum of truth might prevail…
