Two Dead, Nineteen Ill, After Spiritual Retreat Goes Wrong

October 9, 2009

Arizona (ChattahBox) – Two are dead and nineteen others have been hospitalized after many became ill during a ceremonial sauna at a spiritual retreat.

The ‘sweatbox’ is used as a replication of certain Native American rituals, and can be dangerous for certain people with pre-existing medical conditions. The two dead may have been within that category, though police are still investigating.

According to sources, a group of 64 people spent 2 hours in the sweatboxes at the Angel Valley resorts before a number of them began to feel severely ill.

“There are a lot of issues that may have led up to these injuries and deaths,” police spokesman, Dwight D’Evelyn, told the Associated Press.

“It’s not something you would normally see at one of the resorts there, and it is unfortunate regardless of the cause.”

Police are investigating possible contaminants in the sweatboxes, but have so far found nothing strange to indicate foul play, negligence, or an accident.
