GOP Targets Pelosi as Enemy, for Mid-Term Elections Strategy

October 12, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The Wall Street Journal today, notes the resurgence of the tired ploy of Republicans to demonize Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, as a radical lawmaker who is out of touch with more conservative leaning Americans.

Republicans used the anti-Pelosi strategy during elections in 2006 and 2008, without success and now, the minority “Party of No,” determined to obstruct the Obama administration at every turn, plans to repeat the failed tactic in the upcoming 2010 mid-term elections, hoping to link Democrats in centrist districts to the House Speaker’s low approval ratings.

The GOP began its anti-Pelosi strategy during August, running ads in Blue Dog districts, linking the conservative Democrats to Pelosi, as a symbol of too much government spending, global warming and health care reform legislation; polices that Republicans have attacked.

The vitriolic over-the-top rhetoric condemning Speaker Pelosi coming from right-wing lawmakers has also increased of late. Recently, Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), referred to Pelosi, as one of the “domestic enemies of the Constitution,” which he said he pledged to defend against when joining the U.S. Marines.

The paranoid Rep. Broun also referred to President Obama, Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), as part of a “socialist elite” who wants to declare martial law in America.

Extreme rhetoric like that is hard to top, but the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) gave it a go last week, by issuing a press release attacking Pelosi’s stance on the war in Afghanistan, interjecting blatant sexism and misogyny into the mix saying, that Gen. Stanley McChrystal should “put her in her place.”

The first woman Speaker of the House responded to the attack by the NRCC:

“It’s really sad that they really don’t understand how inappropriate that is. I’m in my place. I’m the speaker of the House — the first woman speaker of the House. And I’m in my place because the House of Representatives voted me there,” said Pelosi during her weekly briefing.

Pelosi added that she hadn’t heard sexist language like that used in the NRCC press release in “decades.”

The NRCC responded with a statement from spokeswoman Joanna Burgos snidely saying, “Ms. Pelosi “self-righteously believes she is better suited to craft our country’s military policy” than is Gen. McChrystal.”

Despite the dismal failure with the anti-Pelosi strategy in the past, the GOP is hoping that the “…third time’s a charm in 2010,” according to WSJ’s Naftali Bendavid.

The Democrats are not convinced that the “Pelosi as the enemy of America” strategy is going to resonate with voters.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee believes it shows a desperation and a complete lack of ideas from the Republican Party.

“It’s been a proven failure. “ I’d sum it up by saying, ‘Been there, done that, didn’t work,” said Van Hollen.

‘Recently, Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), referred to Pelosi, as one of the “domestic enemies of the Constitution,” which he said he pledged to defend against when joining the U.S. Marines.’

Funny that he didn’t oppose the highly illegal and unconstitutional actions of the Bush Administration: Torture of POWs, warrantless wiretaps of US citizens, unlawfully detaining US citizens without trial or recourse to legal counsel, and on and on.

Or perhaps he only chooses to “defend” the Constitution when it’s conveninet, like all the other whores pretending to be patriots.

I sure hope this was an opinion piece and not considered as ‘news’. It’s been at least a day since I’ve read so much left wing drivel.

Maybe Pelosi should read THE CHANGING FACE OF DEMOCRATS about the loss of our Libertarian Roots and the history of the Democratic Party. America’s first major political Party changed from a libertarian party of Jefferson to Cleveland to a Rousseau to Marx-leaning liberal, left-wing party. The Democratic Party’s original ideals encouraged free markets, individual freedom, state’s rights and personal sovereignty. What happened? When and how did their policies begin to change? Why did a strongly patriotic party morph into one that blends communism, mercantilism and socialism? Whether you are Democrat or Republican, this narration is a study of history, fact, and the leadership that altered the Democratic Party. It shows that present day Democratic values do not reflect the true principles on which American society rests. Pelosi is a DSA member and obviously rejects the original values of the early Democratic Party.
