Colorado Resort Town Makes Small Amounts of Pot Legal
November 4, 2009
(ChattahBox)—A popular ski town in Colorado will soon provide residents and tourists with a real Rocky Mountain high. The voters of the resort town of Breckenridge approved by a wide margin, the legalization of small amounts of marijuana in a special ballot measure yesterday. The new measure would take effect on January 1, 2010 and would permit adults to possess up to an ounce of pot and decriminalizes marijuana-related paraphernalia.
The ballot initiative 2F, easily passed with 71 percent of voters approving the legalization of small amounts of pot for adults 21 and older. Sean McAllister, a Breckenridge attorney and chairman of reform group Sensible Breckenridge was pleased with the results. “We’re done with the days people could laugh off marijuana reform,” he said after the measure passed.
Although the possession of marijuana is still illegal under state law, Breckenridge Police Chief Rick Holman said his department will “still have the ability to exercise discretion.”
The scenic Rocky Mountain town of Breckenridge has a population of 2,408, as of the last census in 2000, but swells with part-time residents during peak ski season. The ski town can be seen in some scenes from the movie “Dumb and Dumber.”
