Hurricane Ida weakens to Category 1
November 9, 2009
(ChattahBox) — Hurricane Ida, the first Atlantic hurricane to target the United States this year, weakened slightly from a Category 2 to a Category 1 storm earlier Monday, the US National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.
Additional weakening is forecast for the next 24 hours, but a hurricane warning is in effect from Pascagoula, Mississippi, eastward to Indian Pass, Florida, forecasters said as Ida could make landfall as early as Tuesday morning. The tail-end of Ida coupled with a low pressure system in the Pacific caused heavy flooding in El Salvador that left 124 people dead, civil defense officials said. President Mauricio Funes declared a state of emergency. Crude oil knee-jerked upward from a one-week low as Hurricane Ida forced BP Plc and Chevron Corp. to temporarily cut output.
