Rescue fails as spelunker stuck upside down in Utah cave dies overnight
November 26, 2009
(ChattahBox) — After being trapped in the Nutty Putty Caves, Utah for more than 27 hours, a man stuck upside-down died early Thursday, despite the efforts of dozens of rescuers, authorities said. John Jones, 26, a spelunker became stuck 700 feet into the cave wedged in a small hole too tight to pull himself out of. Jones had entered the caves with a group of 11 others, but decided to explore a different route, his brother Josh Jones said.
Rescuers had tried to reach Jones for more than 24 hours, but had problems navigating the treacherous terrain, where visitors have to crawl on their bellies and crews chipping away with air-powered tools in the narrow tunnel. At times dozens of rescuers from several agencies were involved in trying to free him, and there is a report that at one point late in the afternoon, Jones was freed from the crevice, but a piece of equipment being used to help pull him up failed, only to have him fall back several feet into the same tight space. Jones had difficulty breathing in the awkward position he was trapped in and became unresponsive before midnight.

I was great friends with the brother in law of John. My sympathy goes out to their family, friends, and especially his wife and daughter.
