Michele Bachmann: Before Obama, Economy Was 100% Private

December 1, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), the wacky conservative right-wing lawmaker who has attacked President Obama for his “gangster government” and “Socialist” policies, has now come out with a statement claiming that before Obama came into office, the economy was 100% private. In her convoluted worldview, Obama has succeeded in redistributing the wealth, with a federal bailout that was instituted by Republican President George Bush. And according to Bachmann, the passage of health care reform will complete the transformation of America into a Socialist nation.

Apparently a year ago, the United States enjoyed a perfect free-market paradise, according to an interview with the Christian Examiner site:

“I think it is jaw dropping when you think that under his watch, the federal government has taken ownership or control of the private economy. People know that something has really changed. The federal government now owns or controls 30 percent of the private economy. Just over a year ago, you couldn’t say that. Just over a year ago, 100 percent of the private economy was private. Today, 30 percent is owned or controlled by government,”

Of course this is nonsense. The “private” economy is 100% private today, just as it always was, with varying public participation as needed.

Bachmann then goes on to paint a future Socialist/Commie vision of America when health care reform legislation is enacted:

“That’s why if this health care bill passes, government will control an additional 18 percent of the private economy or 48 percent of the private economy. At that point, we’re no longer a free market capitalist system.”

There is no end to the foolishness of Rep. Bachmann’s rhetoric.
