Nelson Abortion Measure Defeated 54 to 45

December 8, 2009

(ChattahBox)—As expected, Sen. Ben Nelson’s (D-NE) health care reform amendment to ensure that no federal subsidies would be used towards abortion services, even if women used private funds, was defeated in a vote of 54 to 45. Nelson’s measure was virtually identical to the amendment sponsored by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), which passed in the House and was included in the House reform bill.

Nelson has threatened to filibuster the Senate health reform bill to prevent its final passage, if his abortion amendment was not included.

“What happened tonight makes it harder to be supportive. We’ll see what happens,” Nelson said.

Although Nelson says he is not walking away from the negotiating table, the conservative lawmaker also expressed an unwillingness to compromise on the abortion measure.

“I had no Plan B. I’m not looking for a Plan B, but others may be,” said Nelson. Republican Sens. Snowe and Collins of Maine voted against Nelson’s measure.

Why is it that old White men, who couldn’t have an abortion anyway, feel like they are qualified to dictate to women what they can do with their own bodies? Oh, that’s right. They’re *rich* old White men, so they own all of the rest of us, don’t they?

    Assholes.
