Ohio Execution Uses New Method For Death Penalty

December 8, 2009

Ohio (ChattahBox) – Kenneth Biros has been executed in Ohio using a new one-drug injection method that is similar to that used when euthanizing animals.

Biros was arrested back in 1991 for the sexual assault and murder of 22-year-old Tami Engstrom. He had agreed to drive the young woman home from a bar, and ended up assaulting her, then stabbing her over 90 times, before dismembering her body and scattering it across two states.

Biros has always claimed that he killed her in a ‘drunken rage’.

He has become the first recipient of a new method of execution that uses anesthetic as a part of its’ process, to make it a painless death.

While being hailed as more humane than the three cocktail method usually used, it is also being seen as a human test on a method that has yet to be properly evaluated by official and medical sources.

Using the example of the electric chair being introduce to the Supreme Court for authorization versus hanging in the late 1800’s, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, Richard C. Dieter, explained:

“The court held that death row prisoner received due process because the New York Legislature had considered the punishment method carefully. In this case, however, everyone has taken the Ohio Department of Corrections at their word, without an adversarial debate.”

Whether this method will be used more regularly is still yet to be seen, but there is no logical way that such a method can be tested for the sake of being humane, a point that Kent Scheidegger, the legal director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, made:

“What kind of test do they expect? A controlled study with volunteers? Not likely.”
