Senator McCain Facing Ethics Probe, Not Concerned

December 10, 2009

U.S. (ChattahBox) – The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) have called for an ethics probe on robo-calls made on behalf of Senator John McCain (R-Arizona).

According to CREW, the calls were funded by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), and asked voters to stand up for an amendment put forward by McCain against the current Senatorial health care bill.

This, CREW says, breaks Senatorial rules number 38, which states that all such campaigns must be paid for out of pocket by the Senator.

“By urging voters to call their senators to urge them to support his motion, Sen. McCain was engaged in grassroots lobbying,” RAW quoted their official statement.

“This activity clearly was related to Sen. McCain’s official duties. By using an outside entity’s funds — those of the NRSC — to pay for expenses related to his official duties, Sen. McCain violated Senate rules … The rules are clear. If Sen. McCain wanted to lobby voters in an effort to see his motion passed he should have paid for the calls himself. Ethics rules are not optional; all the rules apply all the time, not just the ones senators like and not just when it is convenient to follow them.”

But McCain is not concerned, and says that CREW is just a “far-left group” of little consequence, and that their claims are laughable.

“This is a political issue and we paid for it with political money,” McCain told Republic.

“I mean, they might have a beef if I paid for it with Senate money or official money, but that was a political issue paid for with political contributions. It isn’t any more complicated than that.

“It might be an indication of how stung they are. I’m told by the senatorial campaign committee that they are getting responses that they never have before. Our office, of course, is flooded with calls. We cannot keep up.”

Well, it would be only fair for CREW to fund a robo-call campaign to John McCain’s office, urging him to support health care reform and the public option, as multiple independent polls have found the American public wants by an overwhelming majority.

Of course, he won’t do that, because he represents the health insurance companies, not the voters.
