Jingle Bells Tea Party Queen to Force Schools to Play Christmas Carols

December 11, 2009

(ChattahBox)—-Merry Hyatt, teapartier and substitute teacher in Redding California, wants to force public schools to play Christmas carols during the holiday season. Hyatt and her fellow Redding Tea Party Patriots are on a campaign to collect enough signatures to place an initiative on the ballot next year. Hyatt’s fight against the “War on Christmas” is unlikely to make it on the ballot, never mind pass. And if it somehow managed to win passage, it would be declared unconstitutional.

So, what is this right-wing Jingle Bells Queen after? Like most conservative Christians, she wrongly believes that our Founders created a Christian nation based on biblical principles. She couldn’t be more wrong. Many of our Founding Fathers were primarily deists who strongly believed in the separation of church and state.

Hyatt’s initiative would require schools to provide children the opportunity to listen to or perform Christmas carols, and would subject the schools to litigation if the rule isn’t followed. She needs 433,971 signatures by March 29. The public schools in California are allowed to sing or listen to Christmas music for academic reasons, but not for devotional worship.

Erin Ryan, president of the Redding Tea Party Patriots rejects other religious celebrations during the Christmas season. “Bottom line is Christmas is about Christmas,” said Ryan. “That’s why we have it. It’s not about winter solstice or Kwanzaa. It’s like, ‘wow you guys, it’s called Christmas for a reason.”

Hyatt thinks forcing children in public schools to listen to and perform Christian Christmas carols would stop violence in the schools. “He’s the prince of peace; he’s the only one who can get these kids to stop being so violent,” said Hyatt.

And like many right-wing conservatives, Hyatt is confused about the First Amendment of the constitution. She believes her rights of free speech allow her to infringe on others’ religious beliefs.

“It’s our right to have freedom to worship,” she said. “That’s why we came to this country. They came to be Christians and they’re trying to take that away. They’re out of line; we’re not.”

Who are the “they’re” people Hyatt speaks of? People that don’t agree with her stupidity?
