Times Square Shootout: Cop Kills Machine Gun-Packing Street Vendor

December 11, 2009

(ChattahBox)—With just a couple of weeks remaining in the Christmas shopping season, Times Square in New York was crowded with holiday shoppers and tourists on Thursday. But they were treated to more than bright lights and spectacular Christmas storefront displays. An undercover NY City police sergeant, dressed in plain clothes, happened upon an armed and trigger-happy street vendor peddling a CD scam on unsuspecting tourists. A chase ensued with the street peddler firing shots at the police officer in the crowded shopping area. The police sergeant returned fire shooting the fleeing CD peddler dead.

The shootout began at Broadway, between West 44th and 45th Streets right before the lunch hour. Police Sergeant Christopher Newsom, 41, recognized the two CD peddlers, as scam artists who were known for asking passersby for their name, writing the name on a CD and demanding $10.00 for it. When Newson asked the peddlers for their vendors’ tax stamp, one of the men, Raymond Martinez, 25, took flight with Newsom in hot pursuit.

As Martinez neared the main entrance of the Marriott Marquis Hotel, he took out a sub-machine gun from his coat and fired two shots towards Sergeant Newsom, before his gun jammed. Newson got off four shots killing Martinez. All four shots hit the armed street peddler.

No pedestrians were hurt. Martinez’s shots hit a souvenir shop and the box office of the Marquis Theater. Police say they found 27 remaining bullets in Martinez’s semi-automatic weapon, which was later found to be stolen in Virginia.

In an ominous twist, police say they found business cards from several Virginia gun dealers in Mr. Martinez’s pocket. On the back of one of the cards was a scrawled statement referring to a 1980s martial-arts movie.

“I just finished watching ‘The Last Dragon.’ I feel sorry for a cop if he thinks I’m getting into his paddy wagon.”

It wasn’t a machine gun. It was a MAC 10 pistol. This article even states that it was a “semi-automatic weapon,” meaning only one shot is fired each time the trigger is pulled. MAC 10s and similar weapons are just cheap, ugly, funny looking handguns that have a strong tendency to jam. No more “machine guns” than a typical police sidearm. Please correct your misleading and sensationalized headline.

That being said, this guy got what was coming to him. Pulling out a gun on cops in Times Square is about as idiotic as you can get. The incident also demonstrates what New Yorkers already know. Criminals are armed, because by definition they don’t respect the law. Non-criminal New Yorkers remain completely disarmed. There is no reason why NYC shouldn’t, at the very least, adopt the handgun licensing standards used by the rest of the state, that at least provide a somewhat easier (but still time consuming and difficult, and requiring interaction with unsympathetic bureaucrats) path for law abiding citizens to own a handgun.

    Matthew:

Thank you for your comment and information in weaponry. Many of the news reports described the weapon as a machine gun or semi-automatic weapon. Some reports called the weapon a MAC 10 machine gun. The NY Times report referred to the gun, as a submachine gun and a “semiautomatic weapon.”

CBC news called the weapon a “Mac 10 machine gun,” and so on. The CBS report also has this photo caption: Photo: “Officers inspect the Mac 10 machine gun
    and nearby magazine.”

All that being said, I suspect you probably know more about the nature of a MAC 10.

And yes, I agree that we need stricter controls on handguns.

Actually, I was making the case for making it easier for law abiding New Yorkers to obtain handguns. The process for obtaining a handgun in NYC is extremely difficult, effectively banning handgun possession by all but very well connected individuals. In other areas, like Westchester County, and upstate counties, the process for obtaining a handgun is also very difficult compared to most places in the USA, but it is at least possible in practice for law abiding residents to obtain a permit for a registered handgun. Criminals in New York have unlicensed handguns and always will. Law-abiding American citizens with no criminal history should have the option of owning a handgun for self-defense. As a native New Yorker, I realize that the strongly pro-gun laws in most other states would never get support in New York, let alone in the city, but I think some kind of licensing system that is actually accessible and navigable by the typical law abiding New Yorker should be implemented.

It’s amazing no one got hurt except for the idiot who would open fire in a crowded area, there should be stricter rules on markets that operate in the area.
