Utah Mom Disappears, Circumstance ‘Suspicious’, Police Say

December 11, 2009

Utah (ChattahBox) – A 28-year-old stockbroker and mother or two has been reported missing, and police say the case keeps getting more suspicious.

No suspects have so far been named in the case of Susan Powell, who went missing sometime in the early week.

However, the implications are becoming clear, not only from media sources and the police (who have been otherwise rather tight lipped with details), but from family members and neighbors of the missing woman: the spotlight is turning to her husband.

Joshua Powell alleges that he last saw his wife at 12:30 AM as they got ready for bed on Sunday night. He then claims to have taken his four-year-old and one-year-old sons on an impromptu camping trip.

In the middle of December.

During the largest storm of the season.

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. All weekend was freezing, and we had a huge snowfall last week. The idea that anyone would go camping in this, much less with two young children, is ludicrous.

It was the wife’s sister who ended up calling the police, thinking that all four of the Powell’s were missing after neither parent showed up, or called in, to work, and the children didn’t show up at daycare.

For Joshua Powell’s part, he has been described as ‘uninterested’ and ‘calm’ when it comes to his wife’s disappearance.

“I told him if my wife came up missing, I’d be going nuts, I’d be out looking for her. What do you think?” Tim Peterson, a friend of the couple, told Fox News. “He’s like, the cops are handling all that.

“He was talking about his kids, about his clothes, about his sleep. He was talking about his van that police took. He was talking about his house — talking like, I wonder if my bird is dead.”

Susan’s father painted a different picture, as he described a call he received on Tuesday, a day after she was reported missing.

“He informed me that she was missing and he didn’t have any idea where she was. His voice cracked, like he was choking back tears or something.”

However, he did say that he didn’t believe the story of the camping trip, which “didn’t sound normal.”

In the end, none of this means anything, and the evidence is circumstantial at best. But it is certainly an odd story, filled with missing holes that hopefully the police search on the couples home will fill.

We at ChattahBox send our well wishes to Susan Powell, and hope that she will be found safe.
