Gov Rick Perry: Al Gore Has ‘Gone To Hell’ Because of Global Warming Activism

December 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Republican Governor Rick Perry of Texas believes God is on the side of global warming deniers and that those of us who don’t reject science risk going to hell. Appearing before a group of Dallas builders, he derided the cap-and-trade bill, as based on junk science. And when he was asked about his former colleague, former Vice President Al Gore and global warming activist, he responded that Gore has “gone to hell.”

Gromer Jeffers Jr. of the Dallas Morning News asked Perry a question about Gore and their differing views on climate change. Perry was a former Democrat and once worked as the head of Al Gore’s presidential campaign in Texas.

“Did you get religion? Did he get religion?” asked Jeffers. “What has happened since then?”:

“I certainly got religion,” Perry said. “I think he’s gone to hell.”

As expected, Perry’s throwaway line got plenty of laughs. But it certainly points to right-wingers’ injection of God in the climate change debate. Former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey, now head of the astroturf lobbying group FreedomWorks, also invoked God to support his rabid global warming denial.

While appearing on Capitol Hill in July to testify before a Republican hearing on climate change legislation Armey said:

“Let me say I take it as an article of faith if the lord God almighty made the heavens and the Earth, and he made them to his satisfaction and it is quite pretentious of we little weaklings here on earth to think that we are going to destroy God’s creation.”

If Rick Perry and his sort are going the heaven, I’ll take Hell, thanks.
