DC Mayor Fenty Makes History: Signs Same-Sex Marriage Bill

December 18, 2009

(ChattahBox)—On Tuesday, the Washington, DC City Council passed historic legislation permitting same-sex marriage, making the District the sixth community in the country to legalize marriage between same-sex couples. And as promised, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty signed the measure on Friday, paving the way for same-sex weddings, as early as March. The same-sex marriage bill will now make its way for a Congressional 30-day review before it can become enacted into law. The bill is expected to pass the Congressional review process.

The signing of the bill granting equal rights to same-sex couples, was done in a ceremony at All Souls Unitarian Church, which was an early supporter of the bill. As ceremonial pens were handed out to council members, to mark the historic occasion, Mayor Fenty made some remarks stressing the importance of the legislation to the gay community.

“Today an era of struggle ends for thousands of DC residents. Our city is taking a leap forward,” said Fenty.
