Large Percentage of Cocaine Coming into America Being Cut With Veterinary Dewormer

December 20, 2009

(ChattahBox) – A new Centers for Disease Control report finds that 69 percent of cocaine seized at U.S. borders as of July 2009 contained levamisole, with the average concentration was near 10 percent. Levamisole is widely available as a dewormer for cattle and other farm animals, but was once FDA approved for human use in treating colorectal cancer and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis therapy. But it was withdrawn from the human market in 2000 because it has a variety of side effects including agranulocytosis, because safer alternatives are available. Agranulocytosis, also known as agranulosis, is a severe weakening of immune function leading to a failure of the bone marrow to make enough white blood cells

Public health officials in New Mexico and Washington now blame tainted cocaine for 21 cases of the illness, including one death. The CDC report noted that physicians are not required to report agranulocytosis cases to health departments, and patients seeking treatment are likely reluctant to disclose cocaine use. Why illegal drug sellers use levamisole with cocaine is unclear, according to the CDC. Some studies suggest it intensifies the high by boosting dopamine levels in the brain. Other reports say it is used to dilute, or cut, the drug.
