Sen Coburn Prays That Dem ‘Can’t Make the Vote Tonight’

December 20, 2009

(ChattahBox)—As Washington, DC digs out from under over a foot of snow, the Senate was in a rare Sunday session to debate the health care bill before a cloture vote scheduled for one minute after 1:00 AM. The Republicans took to the floor to voice their opposition to health reform, with exchanges between lawmakers, at times getting testy. Sen. Jon Kyle (R-AZ) denied that Republican lawmakers used fearmongering tactics, like death panels to scare seniors. And he said that the Republicans’ insistence that the manager amendments be read out loud was necessary to give the minority side time to read the bill, which was written in “secret” behind closed doors.

Sen Tom Coburn (R-OK) rose to speak and made a statement suggesting that he hoped harm would come to a fellow Senator, which would prevent him or her from appearing for the early morning vote.

Coburn, a vocal critic of health care reform made the following statement:

“What the American people ought to pray is that somebody can’t make the vote tonight. That’s what they ought to pray.”

Minutes later Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) interrupted the speech of his colleague Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and he called on Coburn to return to the floor and explain his statement that he was praying for a Democratic Senator to suffer harm or misfortune, which would prevent the lawmaker from the roll call for the middle of the night vote:

“I have been trying to reach Sen. Coburn. … This statement troubles me, and I’m trying to reach him come back to the floor and explain exactly what he meant about a senator being unable to make the vote tonight. … I’m reaching out to Sen. Coburn. I’ll be on the floor for the next 45 minutes, and I hope that he will join me there.”
