Obama signs Franken’s anti-rape measure into Law – “Republicans for Rape” denied

December 22, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The 2010 Defense Appropriations bill, which passed Saturday night after a Republican filibuster has been signed into law by President Obama.  The bill kept intact Senator Al Franken’s amendment, which prohibits the Defense Department during this appropriations year, from contracting with companies that “restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.” The most shocking thing is that lots of Republicans opposed the legislation with the apparent backing of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Defense, saying it was an unnecessary attack on their allies in the defense contracting business. Franken’s measure passed, 68 to 30, with all 30 nays coming from Republican men, who eventually became the target of a satirical Web site called “Republicans for Rape,” who admonished Republicans’ hypocrisy. The measure was inspired by Jamie Leigh Jones, who was gang-raped by her co-workers while working for Halliburton/KBR in Baghdad.
