Taliban releases video of captured US soldier on Christmas day
December 25, 2009
(ChattahBox) – The Taliban have released a video on Friday, showing US soldier Bowe Robert Bergdahl, who was captured more than five months ago in eastern Afghanistan. It’s the second video to surface of the American serviceman, since he was seized in southern Afghanistan, and the timing of this one seems to be for maximum cruel effect.
Pfc Bowe Bergdahl, 23, of Idaho, the only known captured American serviceman, was taken by the Afghan Taliban in Paktika province on June 30 under suspicious circumstances. Initially, military officials said he walked off his outpost in eastern Afghanistan, but in the first video, which the Taliban sent out in July, Bergdahl said he was captured after he lagged behind during a patrol.
The 36-minute video, which has an English-language narration in parts, also shows images of prisoners in U.S. custody being abused. But Private Bergdahl emphasizes that he has been treated humanely Wearing U.S. Army combat fatigues stripped of the name tag and rank, Bergdahl who was likely compelled to read a prepared statement, says that America has lost any hope of winning the Afghan war and that U.S. political leaders such as George W. Bush and Barack Obama cannot be trusted. He also asserts that the U.S. military’s opponents in Afghanistan are “very smart” and have “perfected” warfare.
At this time the video is not considered a “proof of life” as parts appear to have been filmed some months ago.
