WH to Cheney: You Lie! ‘Obama Doesn’t Need to Beat his Chest to Prove’ War
December 30, 2009
(ChattahBox)—It’s become an all too familiar and despicable pattern. The former Vice President Dick Cheney, who in a sane world would be in prison for war crimes, dials up Politico to issue his attack of vile lies against our President. And Politico dutifully publishes his angry and hysterical screeds word-for-word and the rest of the media treats the ravings of a madman as news. As noted by Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, the rest of us could merely ignore Cheney’s cowardly rants and treat them the same as the blather of “homeless people sitting in bus shelters.” But vicious attacks and outright lies can’t be ignored and this latest attempt by Cheney to undermine the Obama presidency to score cheap political points, after an attempted terrorist attack has gone too far, even for Cheney.
And today, the White House responded by slapping down Cheney and other shameless Republicans for making “political hay,” from an attempted Christmas terrorist attack that could have killed hundreds of innocent people.
White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer issued a strongly worded response to Cheney’s lies claiming that President Obama doesn’t know we are at war:
“There has been a lot of discussion online and in the mainstream media about our response to various critics of the President, specifically former Vice President Cheney, who have been coming out of the woodwork since the incident on Christmas Day.” … “Unfortunately too many are engaged in the typical Washington game of pointing fingers and making political hay, instead of working together to find solutions to make our country safer,” wrote Pfeiffer.
The White House then reminded Cheney and other Republicans of their abject failure at protecting the country from terrorism with their neocon chest beating:
“First, it’s important that the substantive context be clear: for seven years after 9/11, while our national security was overwhelmingly focused on Iraq – a country that had no al Qaeda presence before our invasion.” [...]
“To put it simply: this President is not interested in bellicose rhetoric, he is focused on action. Seven years of bellicose rhetoric failed to reduce the threat from al Qaeda and succeeded in dividing this country. And it seems strangely off-key now, at a time when our country is under attack, for the architect of those policies to be attacking the President.”
Cheney’s lies that Obama pretends we are not at war with terrorists are then nicely dispensed with:
“…[T]he former Vice President makes the clearly untrue claim that the President – who is this nation’s Commander-in-Chief – needs to realize we are at War. I don’t think anyone realizes this very hard reality more than President Obama.” [...]
“President Obama doesn’t need to beat his chest to prove it, and – unlike the last Administration – we are not at war with a tactic (“terrorism”), we at war with something that is tangible: al Qaeda and its violent extremist allies. And we will prosecute that war as long as the American people are endangered.”
Eugene Robinson has a suggestion for a New Year’s resolution for Dick Cheney, the torture lover with five deferments: “Ahead of your quest for personal vindication, put country first.”
