Wikipedia Reported Rush Limbaugh Dead

January 1, 2010

(ChattahBox) — Perhaps wishful thinking on someones part?  Wikipedia jumped the gun on the Rush Limbaugh story, and shortly after the news broke that the conservative political radio talk show host was hospitalized after experiencing chest pains similar to a heart attack, updated his page – and pronounced him dead.

Rush Hudson Limbaugh III (pronounced  /ˈlɪmbɔː/;born January 12, 1951, died December 30, 2009) is an American radio host and conservative political commentator. He is the host of The Rush Limbaugh Show, the highest-rated talk-radio program in the United States. It airs throughout the U.S. on Premiere Radio Networks.

The error was corrected 15 minutes later. Reminding me of the Mark Twain quote “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

The latest reports vague as they are, have Rush comfortably resting at the hospital in Honolulu, while doctors are still conducting several tests to find the reason behind the chest pain. It isn’t clear if Rush would be healthy enough to return to the airwaves Monday when he’s due back.

I’ve seen this “article” – which I call an article simply for the sake of argument – on another site tonight and I have to say that its author simply doesn’t understand how wikipedia works.

The reason wikipedia is such a fantastic tool for knowledge, is that it is constantly updated, its content reviewed for accuracy and it is not in printed form. Therefore when someone jumps the gun, it can be easily corrected so as to not cause a widespread proliferation of bad information.

It’s too bad that there isn’t a similar peer-review process for online articles.
