Robert Gates Stays on as Defense Secretary

January 8, 2010

(ChattahBox) – For better or worse, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has decided to stay at least another year. Gates the most prominent Republican in President Barack Obama’s inner circle said he would stay on at least through the end of 2010.

“Secretary Gates met with the president just before Christmas (2009) and gave him a commitment to stay on the job for at least another year,” spokesman Geoff Morrell said in an e-mail.

Morrell said Obama and Gates, 66, agreed to revisit the issue later in 2010.

Brought on by President Obama to help transition between administrations, Gates served in the same position under President Bush, where he helped implement the “surge” in Iraq, and is now overseeing a major increase in troops in Afghanistan as well.
