CNN Correspondant Performs Brain Surgery On Haitian Girl

January 19, 2010

USS Carl Vinson (ChattahBox) – A 12-year-old Haitian girl was operated on aboard the military ship the USS Carl Vinson by CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta in an emergency surgery after the Haiti earthquake disaster.

The unnamed girl had been badly injured when a building tumbled, a 0.4-inch piece of concrete penetrating her skull, needing to be removed in a highly dangerous operation.

“Someone got a hold of our international desk,” Gupta, who is a practicing neurosurgeon.

“They said there was an urgent call from the Carl Vinson. So I put a call in to them and there was something about a head injury.”

Gupta was originally in Haiti to perform various reports on the disaster. In between the reports he performed the surgery alongside Henri Ford and Kathryn Berndt, two other surgeons on board.

The girl is expected to make a full recovery.
