CIA Chief: Lone Wolf Terrorists ‘Main Threat’ to America
February 3, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Senior U.S. intelligence officials appeared before Congress on Tuesday, to present the government’s first quadrennial homeland security review to lawmakers. CIA Director Leon Panetta warned that the United States should expect a terrorist attack in the next three to six months, but not a large scale 9/11 type of attack. Panetta said that al-Qaeda is working towards deploying “clean” recruits to the U.S. to wage terror attacks. And that radicalized lone wolves both homegrown and foreign, are one of the main threats to America.
“The biggest threat is not so much that we face an attack like 9/11. It is that al Qaeda is adapting its methods in ways that oftentimes make it difficult to detect,” Panetta told the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Panetta said that “clean” al-Qaeda recruits with no red flags in their backgrounds to alert authorities are being groomed to enter the U.S. to launch small-scale terror attacks.
Panetta also warned of radicals acting alone “It’s the lone-wolf strategy that I think we have to pay attention to as the main threat to this country,” he said.
