Obama Ready to Flex Some Muscle With Executive Powers
February 13, 2010
(ChattahBox)—With unprecedented Republican obstructionism driving the work of Congress to a virtual standstill, President Obama is preparing to use his executive power to advance his domestic agenda and to get the wheels of government moving again. According to a piece in today’s The New York Times, Obama is consulting with his White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel to issue a series of presidential executive orders.
After Senate Republicans, who co-sponsored a bipartisan budget commission voted against its passage, Obama decided to use his executive power to create the commission on his own. And the Environmental Protection Agency is moving ahead to deal with the effects of climate change, despite congressional opposition to the cap-and-trade bill.
“We are reviewing a list of presidential executive orders and directives to get the job done across a front of issues,” said Emanuel.
And with the Republican holds on Obama’s nominees, he is expected to resort to making recess appointments soon. During Bill Clinton’s time in office, he made 139 recess appointments, and George W. Bush made 171. President Obama has not yet made any recess appointments.
