GOP Rep. Broun: Obama a Zombie ‘With No Soul’
February 25, 2010
(ChattahBox)— Bizarre and over-the-top rhetoric from Republicans on the House floor is nothing new in this age of bitter partisanship. The GOP has portrayed Obama as a Socialist, Marxist, Nazi and secret Muslim. But Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) may have gone totally over the edge in his characterization of Obama as a zombie without a soul.
The extreme right-wing Republican took to the House floor last night to rail against healthcare reform, which he called “Obamacare.” He claimed that Obama’s plan to fix the broken healthcare system in our country, to expand coverage and lower costs, was “voodoo economics,” because the Southern Republican said the plan would raise taxes:
BROUN: “He and his administration have used what I call voodoo economics. The reason I call it voodoo economics is because you have to be a dead man walking around with no soul to believe the economic parameters of the economic issues that they put in place. But this, this Obamacare raises taxes and will raise taxes on virtually everybody.”
As pointed out by Media Matters, Republican economic proposals are more likely to be based on voodoo magic:
“It’s not President Obama’s economic parameters that are based on magic, but rather a belief, held by many Republican members of Congress including Broun, that the government can simultaneously cut taxes and balance the budget. As President Obama told Republicans a few weeks ago, “I’m going to want to take a look at your math and see how that works.”‘
Vitriolic rhetoric is nothing new to Broun, he previously characterized Obama’s national service proposals to Adolf Hitler’s security forces. “That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,” Broun said. “When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.”
