GOP Rep. Trent Franks: Slavery Better Deal for Blacks Than Life Today
February 27, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), a strident anti-abortion activist and extreme right-wing conservative, made some offensive remarks earlier this week that left the sane among us shaking our heads. Franks suggested that African Americans were better off under slavery than they are today with the availability of abortion services for women. The Black community does not look back so fondly towards slavery as does Rep. Franks.
The unhinged Franks, who once attacked President Obama as “an enemy of humanity” and as someone who “acts un-American,” is also a full-on birther conspiracy theorist. He said that President Obama “doesn’t want people to see” his birth certificate.
Franks made his recent remarks during a video interview with blogger Mike Stark on the topic of uncivil political discourse from right-wing pundits, such as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. Franks defended hate talk show host Rush Limbaugh’s racism and bigotry, as important discussions “to invoke thought process” and to make people think.”
Franks then veered into his favorite topic of abortion and said that slavery was responsible for far less devastation of the Black population than abortion:
FRANK: “In this country, we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say “How brave were they? What was the matter with them? You know, I can’t believe, you know, four million slaves. This is incredible.” And we’re right, we’re right. We should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America’s soul. And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted. Far more of the African-American community is being devastated by the policies of today than were being devastated by policies of slavery. And I think, What does it take to get us to wake up?”
Later, Franks acknowledged that his remarks were “intemperate,” but he said that he didn’t want “to hide from the truth.” It’s unclear where Franks came up with his “truthful” statistics. In the reality-based world where people besides Republican lawmakers live, about a third of African American pregnancies end in abortion.
The DCCC responded to Franks remarks about slavery: “To compare the horrors and inhumane treatment of millions of African Americans during slavery as a better way of life for African Americans today is beyond repulsive. In 2010, during the second year of our first African American President, it is astonishing that a thought such as this would come to mind, let alone be shared.”
Franks slavery remarks begin at the 6.20 mark of the video below.
