McCain vs. Teabagger Dustup Over Blue Face ‘Avatar’ Ad
March 5, 2010
(ChattahBox)— There are months to go before the Republican U.S. Senate primary election between Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), the ornery maverick and teabagger-birther candidate J.D. Hayworth, but the campaign is already comedy gold. On Thursday, in honor of the Oscars, Hayworth placed an ad on the right-wing site the Drudge Report depicting McCain as a blue-faced native member of the movie “Avatar.” McCain complained about the ad, saying that it was insensitive to Native Americans. And in response, Hayworth’s staff photoshopped McCain’s image to add more shades of blue to his face. The Maverick responded in a statement that the ad was “petty and insulting.” Just recently, McCain ran his own attack ad against Hayworth, depicting the former congressman and conservative talk radio host, as an extremist birther conspiracy theorist, in which birther queen Orly Taitz made a cameo appearance spewing her wackiness.
Hayworth’s first Avatar ad showed McCain with just a few broad strokes of blue paint on his face, but after McCain complained, Hayworth’s staff, issued a statement telling McCain to “get a sense of humor.” The second ad depicted McCain’s face fully covered with different hues of blue paint. The text on the ad reads: “John McCain, nominee for Best Conservative Actor.”
McCain’s campaign communications director released a statement responding to the second ad:
“The Hayworth campaign obviously understands that the ad is offensive since they’ve already changed it. Unfortunately, this proves yet again that Mr. Hayworth isn’t focused on solving the big challenges Arizona faces, but instead seems consumed by petty and insulting attacks against Senator McCain. It’s another example of just how hollow all of Mr. Hayworth’s talk about ‘respecting’ Senator McCain actually is.”
The second ad appears on Hayworth’s campaign site.
