Obama Signs Executive Order Re-Affirming Law Banning Federal Funds for Abortion
March 24, 2010
(ChattahBox)— A small signing ceremony was held at the White House today, in which President Obama placed his signature on an executive order re-affirming long-held restrictions on federal funds being used for abortion services. The executive order was part of a compromise reached with anti-abortion Democrats led by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), to ease their concerns that the Senate healthcare reform bill, despite language to the contrary, may in some way provide indirect federal subsidies for abortion services.
The signing ceremony was held in the Oval Office, with 14 Democratic lawmakers in attendance. The current law of the land banning federal funds for abortion services under the Hyde Amendment, combined with the strong language in the healthcare reform bill prohibiting federal subsidies for abortions, together with President Obama’s executive order, should put the issue to rest, at least in the minds of reasonable lawmakers.
The ceremony was closed to the press, but the White House issued an official photo with the caption: “President Barack Obama signs an Executive Order that reaffirms the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s conssistency (sic) with longstanding restrictions on the use of federal funds for abortion, in the Oval Office, March 24, 2010.”
