Steele Fires Staffer Who Expensed GOP Foray to Topless Bondage Club

March 30, 2010

(ChattahBox)— RNC Chairman Michael Steele is perhaps, hoping, that the firing of a low level staffer responsible for expensing the nearly $2,000 for a late-night jaunt to a topless bondage club featuring simulated lesbian sexual acts, may save his job. Steele, the gaffe-prone, clownish Republican chairman, has come under increasing fire for his lavish and over-the-top travel expenses using donor’s money. And the latest financial brouhaha, of reimbursing GOP political operative Erik Brown, for a visit to the racy sex club Voyeur, hasn’t helped Steele’s precarious standing. But for now, the unnamed staffer will take the fall and friends and business associates of Brown’s are painting the owner of a California-based direct-mail firm, as a decent churchgoing Republican who was lured to the bondage club by the over-eager RNC staffer.

According to Politico, the outing to the West Hollywood sex club, Voyeur, followed a sanctioned RNC event in Los Angeles, as part of its “Young Eagles” program.

RNC chief of staff Ken McKay, announced the firing of the staffer in an internal email obtained by Politico, pointing out that the unnamed staffer “was aware that this activity was not eligible for reimbursement and had been previously counseled on this very subject. Accordingly, that staff person has been terminated.”

According to McKay’s missive, “Chairman Michael Steele nor any senior staff were aware of either the outing or the committee’s reimbursement of the cost.”

And Politico helpfully printed a statement from an anonymous source, absolving Erik Brown from initiating the trip to the bondage club:

“A source with knowledge of the situation said Brown, a churchgoing, midlevel political operative, “was not entirely thrilled with the venue that people ended up at” but nonetheless agreed to foot the bill after the RNC staffer in question told him the committee would reimburse the cost.”

And RNC spokesman Doug Heye said of Brown: “It is unfortunate that a loyal GOP donor who has recruited other donors became involved in this incident while merely trying to help what turned out to be the improper request of a staffer who is no longer with the committee.”

Leif Larson, the head of the Washington office for Brown’s firm, Dynamic Marketing Inc., described Brown, as “a good husband” who is religious and is “strongly in favor of fiscal conservatism.”

Politico noted, “FEC filings show that federal campaigns and committees — including committees associated with 2008 GOP presidential candidates John McCain, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani — have paid DMI $161,200 since 2006. However, Larson said the bulk of the firm’s business is for California state candidates and committees.”

But, apparently not all of Brown’s clients are convinced of Brown’s churchgoing habits. California state Rep. Chuck DeVore, who is making a run for the U.S. Senate, “has severed all ties” with DMI, according to The Hill.

Meanwhile, it looks like Michael Steele will remain at the helm of the RNC, to provide additional entertainment going into the November elections.
