Fox News Radicalized My Son, Says Mom of Pelosi Threatener
April 8, 2010
(ChattahBox)—A Northern California man with mental problems and a history of criminal threats and petty theft was arrested by federal authorities on Wednesday for threatening the life of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) over passage of healthcare reform. Gregory Giusti, 48, made dozens of threatening phone calls to Pelosi’s homes in Washington and San Francisco, as well as her husband’s business office. This makes the third arrest of a person making death threats against federal lawmakers, in the wake of the vitriolic political climate and fearmongering by Republicans opposed to the healthcare law. And Giusti’s elderly mother, Eleanor, blames Fox News for inciting violence and instilling fear in her disturbed son. He gets his “radical” ideas from Fox News Eleanor Giusti told San Francisco affiliate, KGO-TV.
According to reports on Giusti’s arrest:
“[S]everal federal officials have told the Associated Press that the man made dozens of calls to Pelosi’s homes in California and Washington, as well as to her husband’s business office. They said he recited her home address and said if she wanted to see it again, she would not support the health care overhaul bill that was recently enacted. One official said the man is believed to have spoken directly to Pelosi at least once.”
Acknowledging that her son has mental problems, Eleanor Giusti, 83, said that he never owned a gun and is not capable of carrying out his threats. She points the finger at the Conservative propaganda outlet Fox News for radicalizing her son:
“Greg frequently gets in with a group of people that have really radical ideas and that are not consistent with myself or the rest of the family, which gets him into problems,” Eleanor Giusti said. “I say Fox News, or all of those that are really radical, and he, that’s where he comes from.”
The way Fox News continually demonizes Nancy Pelosi and the healthcare law using extreme apocalyptic language; it’s not surprising someone like Gregory Giusti was incited to make death threats against the Speaker of the House.
And Media Matters wants to know what Fox News plans to do about it:
“The violent language and scare tactics we see on Fox News every day have real consequences,” said Eric Burns, President of Media Matters. “This is a network that ran a 14-month campaign against health care reform, which left their viewers confused and angry. The question is, now that one of those viewers has allegedly threatened Speaker Pelosi’s life over health care reform, is Fox News going to do anything about it?”
