Sex Offender Pleads Guilty To Chelsea King Murder And Others
April 18, 2010
California (ChattahBox) – The California sex offender who was arrested in the rape and murder of Chelsie King has plead guilty to her death, the murder of Amber DuBois, and the assault and attempted rape of Candace Moncayo.
John Gardener III was arrested in early March in the case of King, a missing 17-year-old whose remains were found on a hiking trail a few days later.
He was then suspected of killing 14-year-old Amber DuBois, whose remains were found after more than a year a few days after his arrest.
In the meantime, it had come to light that 23-year-old Moncayo had been attacked by a man matching Gardner’s description a few months earlier while on the same hiking trail that Chelsea was killed on. She was able to fight him off and alert police.
The death penalty was on the table, but Gardner has now plead guilty to all three crimes, leading prosecutors to take it off.
Chelsea King’s father says he doesn’t care that Gardner won’t be taking the needle for his little girl’s death.
“While our unequivocal first choice is the death penalty, we acknowledge that in California that penalty has become an empty promise,” he said in a statement, referring to the average death row wait of 25 years for inmates sentenced to die.
