Fla. State Lawmaker Outraged Over Protections for ‘Homeless Bums’

April 22, 2010

(ChattahBox)—Republican state Rep. for the Florida State Legislature, Paige Kreegle has no compassion for the thousands of homeless in our country. During a recent debate on passage of a bill adding homeless people to an existing hate crimes law, Kreegle offensively referred to the homeless as “homeless bums. “ And he became outraged that in his view, lazy hobos would have more rights than his wife and children. The bill was enacted in response to the recent murder of a Florida homeless man who was beaten to death by three teenagers. And nationally, Florida ranks first in the country for violence against the homeless.

Kreegle, who is also a medical doctor and married father of three children, questioned Rep. Ari Porth, sponsor of the homeless hate crimes bill, lambasting his colleague for protecting “homeless bums,” dismissing the wave of violence against the homeless in his state:

According to the report by the Miami Herald:

“He first asked Porth to define “hate.” “It’s a question of fact for the jury, and you know it when you see it, Porth said.”

“Kreegle then noted that he liked to read the police blotter in his newspaper, where he noticed crimes committed against “homeless bums.” “They tend to be perpetrated not by members of the Legislature or women and children but mainly by other homeless bums,” Kreegle said.”

‘”I take offense to the word ‘bum.’” Porth responded. Kreegle dropped that term but continued his questions. “It would be a lesser crime if they beat up my wife and kids,” Kreegle said. “How will you purport to get the message out to the homeless people that when they become hateful and want to beat somebody up that they need to go beat up my wife and kids instead of another homeless person?”‘

“Porth said the idea one homeless person would attack another due to hatred of homeless people was “just preposterous.”

The bill subsequently passed. Porth pointed out that the homeless are a particularly vulnerable class of people. “Nobody is more vulnerable,” said Porth. “They have no place to retreat to. They don’t have a home to retreat to and be safe in.”

Seems to me that Kreegle has gotten the word out; he wants someone to beat up his wife and kids. Did he say how much he’s offering for the hit?
