Lone Star Madness: ‘Obama is God’s Punishment on Us’
April 26, 2010
(ChattahBox)—The vitriolic rhetoric against our president is unprecedented. Extreme right-wing politicians and tea party members have tried to delegitimize our first black president, claiming President Obama is not a natural born citizen, a secret Muslim, a Fascist, Socialist, Marxist and Nazi. And radical Christians have even prayed for his death. But leave it to the State of Texas to take the hate several steps beyond crazy, by claiming that God inflicted Barack Obama on us as a punishment for our sins.
The “Taking Back America” rally on Saturday, headlined by Gov. Rick Perry and Fox News conspiracy-theorist Glenn Beck, was dominated by radical right-wing rhetoric and militant anti-Obama language. But the local Tyler newspaper described the event, as a “rousing religious and patriotic rally.”
And state Republican Rep. Leo Berman, adding to the vitriol, took to the stage to declare that the election of Barack Obama was due to God’s wrath:
“I believe that Barack Obama is God’s punishment on us today, but in 2012, we are going to make Obama a one-term president,” said Berman.
Berman is widely-known for his extreme nativist anti-immigration legislation. One such bill, would restrict undocumented immigrants to “sanctuary cities.” And last year, some of his constituents called for his censure, after engaging in a heated debate with Harry Joe, a Chinese American immigration lawyer from Dallas. Berman told Harry Joe to “go home” (as in “back to China”) and “kiss my ass.”
Not surprisingly, Berman has received numerous acknowledgments for his 100 percent conservative voting record, including the highest ratings from the Christian Coalition and the Young Conservatives of Texas. The right-wing lawmaker also boasts of an A+ rating with the National Rifle Association and Texas State Rifle Association.
Glenn Beck, in keeping with his latest televangelism, invoked God repeatedly in his anti-Obama rant during the rally:
“We must remember who we are. We must remember what brought us here. We must remember what protected us. We must remember these rights do not belong to us — they come from God,” Beck said. The crowd rose in unison to its feet applauding loudly and yelling. “If God is with us, who can possibly stand against us? The answer is no one.”
Gov. Rick Perry who likes to appease his tea party supporters by flirting with secession, spoke of the tea party’s stated goal of “taking our country back.” And in an interview, Perry spoke of a tea party “army” opposing President Obama.
“I consider myself proud to be in that army,” Perry said.
