Arizona De-Profiler Masks: ‘Help a Friend be White Today’

May 4, 2010

(ChattahBox)— Arizona’s “Show your papers” anti-immigration law, which institutionalizes racial profiling, has received widespread condemnation for essentially making it a crime to be brown. Now, brown visitors to Arizona can hide in plain sight and avoid being hassled by the police, by donning a mask “of a friendly white person’s face.”

The tongue-in-cheek website Deprofiler.com, draws attention to the racial profiling inherent in the new immigration measure, by providing paper masks of white people, as a preventative measure to avoid being “harassed by the police.” The site points out that the deprofiler mask “removes reasonable suspicion” that you could be an undocumented immigrant, which would allow police to demand your papers showing proof of residency:

‘Being brown was never easy. But now, due to SB 1070 it can get you thrown in jail. Deprofiler.com allows you to print a mask of a friendly white person’s face to wear while you are in Arizona. Now you can bask in the freedom and confidence you’ll never be harassed by the police.”

The available deprofiler masks, include men, women and children of various ages, as well as an infant.

“Sharing is caring, and in this case it just might keep someone out of jail. Help a friend be white today,” reads the website.

Deprofiler.com directs viewers to a NYTimes article about the draconian immigration law and urges contributions to Reform Immigration for America, a group devoted to building “support for workable comprehensive immigration reform,” which “strengthens equal opportunity and the rule of law.”
