Gov. Sanford Still Pines for Argentine Soul Mate
May 12, 2010
(ChattahBox)—After questions were raised about South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s whereabouts last weekend, he acknowledged that he spent time in Florida with his Argentine lover. And as always, the now-divorced Appalachian Trail-hiking Lothario has offered up way too much information. Instead of just acknowledging he has been continuing a relationship with a woman he once referred to as his “soul mate” and leave it at that, Sanford revealed he spent the weekend with her to determine whether their relationship “could be restarted.”
According to The State newspaper, Sanford made his remarks during a news conference on another matter. Reporters had previously asked about his trip, but his staff didn’t provide any details:
“As a matter of record, everybody in this room knows exactly who I was with over the weekend,” Sanford said. “That is no mystery to anybody given what I said last summer. And, you know, the purpose was obviously to see if something could be restarted on that front given the rather enormous geographic gulf between us. And time will tell. I don’t know if it will or won’t.”
He said he was protected during his weekend jaunt by law enforcement and he was in touch with his office—something he failed to do last summer when he disappeared to Argentina to be in the arms of his lover and a huge scandal erupted. Sanford was censured by the state legislature and his and his wife Jenny divorced.
Now that Sanford is no longer a married man, he suggested to the press that they should stay put of his personal life.
“But this obsession with one’s personal life at some point has got to end,” Sanford said.
