Fox News’ Perino: Univision Not ‘American Press’
May 20, 2010
(ChattahBox)—-Former Bush White House Press Secretary Dana Perino, now makes her living appearing on Fox News to bash the Obama administration. And last night on Greta Van Susteren’s On the Record, Perino stuck to her GOP talking points charging that President Obama has “disdain for the press.” But what stood out in her remarks, was her claim that the Hispanic media outlet Univision is not “American.”
Perino made her remarks in response to complaints made by some White House reporters that Obama ignored them, during yesterday’s joint news conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon. And The Hill, posted a piece on the flap, entitled “Obama shuns English-language news outlets at press conference.” As noted by The Hill, the usual protocol for such a news conference, is ‘”one and one” or a “two and two,” meaning one or two reporters from each country will be called on to ask a question.”
But when President Obama called on Univision, the press howled, including CBS’ Chip Reid, who wanted to question Obama about the Super Tuesday primary elections. Both questions asked by the chosen media outlets were about immigration.
The establishment White House press, nor Dana Perino may not like it, but Univision is an American media company, although it reports in Spanish.
“In a statement to The Hill, a Univision spokeswoman said: “Not only is Univision a U.S. based company — we are headquartered in New York City — but we are one of the top five networks in the country regardless of language.”‘
And White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs noted that the media company began in San Antonio and is now based in New York City.
As summed up by Christine Schwen of Media Matters, Perino’s expertise on just about any subject, is suspect. “You would expect someone who took questions from the White House Press Corps for more than a year to avoid mistakes like this. I suppose it’s not all that surprising coming from someone who claimed America was not attacked on President Bush’s watch and said she didn’t know what the Cuban Missile Crisis was…”
