BP Oil Spill Leads To MMS President Sacking

May 27, 2010

US (ChattahBox) – The president of the Minerals Management Service (MMS), the department responsible for regulating the oil drilling practices of major companies such as BP, has been fired.

The Gulf Coast spill has become the largest oil spill disaster in history, and one of the largest environmental blunders to boot.

With oil still spilling into the ocean, and BP working to stop the flow, experts have been pointing the finger at MMS to find out what happened with the regulation they were supposed to provide.

Elizabeth Birnbaum fell under the sword as the president, and her firing is understandable and needed. However, the overall practice of the MMS should be called into question, not the authority of a single figure.

In the end, she was doing the contradictory job she was supposed to. The MMS is a regulatory agency, but they are also one meant to generate profit. With a demand that puts it at odds with itself, is it any surprise this happened?
