No Nuking of Gushing Oil Well: ‘It’s Crazy’
June 3, 2010
(ChattahBox)— Nuke, baby nuke? Media pundits and so-called “experts” have been suggesting that a nuclear bomb would close off the gushing oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. Even CNN reporter John Roberts weighed in on the nuke solution last week, saying “Drill a hole, drop a nuke in and seal up the well.” But White House officials have now taken steps to put a damper on the apocalyptic nuclear option talk, by calling the idea “crazy.”
As reported by The New York Times this morning, the White House has not considered the nuclear option, pointing out such a move would violate several arms treaties, not to mention the severe health consequences from radiation poisoning:
“Stephanie Mueller, a spokeswoman for the Energy Department, said that neither Energy Secretary Steven Chu nor anyone else was thinking about a nuclear blast under the gulf. The nuclear option was not — and never had been — on the table, federal officials said.”
“It’s crazy,” one senior official said.
Proponents of the nuclear option to cap the gushing oil well from the sunken Deepwater Horizon oil rig, point to the use of nuclear bombs used by the Russians decades ago to plug out of control oil wells. But the Soviet nuclear blasts were on land and did not involve gushing oil miles beneath the surface of the ocean.
The last time the United States detonated a nuclear bomb, was in 1992 at a Nevada testing site.
