Helen Thomas Doesn’t Make it Through the Day, She Retires, Effective Immediately
June 7, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Well, this was certainly expected. Hearst Newspapers announced that long-time White House press corps member, Helen Thomas is retiring at the age of 89. After video of offensive comments by Thomas recently surfaced, saying that the Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine,” calls for her to be fired intensified over the weekend.
Hearst Newspapers posted the following brief story announcing Thomas’ retirement:
“Helen Thomas announced Monday that she is retiring, effective immediately. Her decision came after her controversial comments about Israel and the Palestinians were captured on videotape and widely disseminated on the Internet.”
“Thomas later issued a statement: “I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.’’’
In addition to her apology, Thomas admitted to Washington Post columnist Howard Kurtz, that she “crossed the line” with her offensive comments.
