Dem Congressman Has YouTube Tussle With Mysterious Student Cameramen
June 14, 2010
(ChattahBox)—The video making the rounds today, comes courtesy of Andrew Breitbart’s right-wing Big Government website, which previously promoted the heavily edited ACORN sting videos, falsely suggesting that James O’Keefe was dressed in an outlandish pimp costume, when he visited ACORN offices. Now, Brietbart is promoting a video of Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-NC) on a Washington street, made by two self-described “students” working on a project. The student cameramen blurred their faces in the video and refused to disclose their identity to Rep. Etheridge. But the edited video depicts an angry Etheridge seemingly grabbing one of the cameraman’s wrists and attempting to twist his head towards the camera. The videos make poor Etheridge appear deranged, as he continually asks “Who are you?”
The videos were uploaded on YouTube under the name “DCCameraGuy” with no additional identifying information. One of the students is shown asking Etheridge, “Do you fully support the Obama agenda?” When the students refused to identify themselves, the encounter got heated:
“We’re just here for a project, sir,” said one of the students.
“I have a right to know who you are,” Etheridge said.
“I’m just a student, sir,” said one of the students.
Finally, Etheridge walked away and the encounter ended.
Etheridge issued a statement from his office today, apologizing for his “poor response” to the street encounter:
“I have seen the video posted on several blogs,” Etheridge said in a statement. “I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved. Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina, I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse.”
Meanwhile, the blogosphere is all abuzz with uncovering the identity of the self-described college students working on a project, who may really be Republican trackers set on ambushing a Democratic Congressman in the age of YouTube.
