Does Actor Kevin Costner Have the Answer to BP Cleanup?
June 14, 2010
(ChattahBox)— In the aftermath of BP’s oil disaster in the Gulf region, it’s become abundantly clear that the oil industry’s technology for dealing with an oil spill has not kept up with 21st century advances to extract the oil out of the earth. In fact, the strategies used by BP to contain and clean up the massive oil disaster have not been updated since the 70s. Apparently, it takes the vision of a Hollywood actor to provide a solution for cleaning up toxic crude oil from our oceans. Like a plot from an action-drama, Kevin Costner has arrived just in the nick of time to save the Gulf from ultimate destruction, with his nifty centrifuge oil separator machines.
Costner became inspired to invest in the oil separator technology, after watching the destruction of Alaska’s Prince William Sound when the Exxon Valdez tanker spilled millions of gallons of oil into the pristine environment. He helped form the creation of the company Ocean Therapy Solutions, which has developed the oil cleanup machines based on the principle of centrifuge technology:
“The machines are basically sophisticated centrifuge devices that can handle a huge volume of water and separate at unprecedented rates,” said Ocean Therapy Solutions CEO John Houghtaling. “They were developed from older centrifuge technology. Normal centrifuge machines are very slow and sensitive to different ratios of oil to water mixtures at intake.”
After initial testing and some fine-tuning to accommodate the oil in the Gulf made denser from the use of dispersants, BP ordered 32 of Costner’s machines.
During Costner’s testimony before a Congressional panel last week, he dismissed the narrative that he was riding in from Hollywood on a white horse to save the day. But he pointed put that he was shocked that the oil industry has not kept pace with new cleanup technologies:
“It may seem like an unlikely scenario that I am the one delivering this technology at this moment in time, but from where I’m sitting, it is equally inconceivable that these machines are not already in place,” he said.
