Palin’s ‘Official’ Legal Defense Fund Illegal, Donations Will be Returned
June 25, 2010
(ChattahBox)–A state inquiry into Sarah Palin’s legal defense fund, set up while she was still governor of Alaska, was found to be illegal yesterday. The state Personnel Board took issue with Palin’s use of the word” official” on the fund’s website, improperly implying Governor Palin’s endorsement. Palin’s attorney, said she will repay the nearly $390,000 in donations.
The state investigator Investigator Timothy Petumenos, also found that Palin acted in good faith, by relying on a team of attorneys to properly administer the fund to solicit donations for legal expenses associated with multiple ethical complaints filed against Palin.
Former Palin spokesperson Meghan Stapleton, posted a lengthy, spirited and folksy, “Mamma Grizzly” defense of Palin on her Facebook page, describing herself, as “Mom, Wife, and Now More Knowledgeable Than Ever About Legal Defense Funds.”
Stapleton portrayed Palin as a victim of political persecution:
Palin’s legal team believed the fund “was lawful in all respects,” but that “within a day or two” of its creation, “a complaint was filed against it challenging its legality,” wrote Stapleton.
“And so started another prolonged legal battle – this time to determine if the legal fund created to defend Governor Palin against frivolous ethics complaints was itself ethical. Quite a circle really.”
Palin previously was forced to repay to Alaska, about $8,000 in travel expense for her children, improperly billed to the state.
