C-Span Promotes Conspiratorial Book ‘The Manchurian President’
June 27, 2010
(ChattahBox)—C-Span2-Book TV is promoting a conspiracy laden tome suggesting President Obama is a Communist-controlled Manchurian candidate, under the section “Top Nonfiction Authors and Books.” The book, “The Manchurian President: Barack Obama’s Ties to Communists, Socialists and Other Anti-American Extremists,” is written by WorldNetDaily’s Aaron Klein. WorldNetDaily is considered the fevered online swamp of deranged conspiracy theories and is the leading proponent of the birther falsehood that Obama is an illegal alien. Why is C-Span lending credibility to such conspiratorial nonsense?
Klein, WND’s Jerusalem bureau chief, has a long and sordid history of lobbing evidence-free attacks against the Obama administration, according to Media Matters. And he repeatedly bases his attacks on questionable anonymous sources:
“Klein’s attacks on Obama and his nominees are only a part of a constant stream of attacks on Obama, many of them dubious and even false, peddled by WorldNetDaily since Obama announced his candidacy for president. Most notoriously, WND has been a leading promoter of the idea that Obama is not a “natural-born citizen” of the United States and, thus, ineligible to be president – even soliciting donations to erect billboards asking, “Where’s the Birth Certificate?”‘
Klein’s book, “The Manchurian President,” is described as an expose of Obama’s “far-leftist, anti-American nexus that has been instrumental in not only helping build Obama’s political career but in securing his presidency.”
C-Span touts the book, by making available a video clip of Klein’s appearance on G. Gordon Liddy’s right-wing fringe talk radio program.
“Mr. Klein discusses ties he says President Obama has to fringe organizations and extremists. He appears here on G. Gordon Liddy’s radio program,” reads C-Span’s program description.
Why is C-Span2–Book TV promoting kooky conspiracy theories?
