Az. Gov. Brewer Stokes Fear AGAIN: Illegals Want to Cut Off Our Heads!
July 2, 2010
(ChattahBox)–If you were surprised to learn recently from Gov. Jan Brewer that hordes of illegal Mexicans are storming across Arizona’s border to cut off the heads of American citizens, join the club. That sounds just horrible doesn’t it? Except that it isn’t true. The falsehood is just another shameful attempt by Brewer to stoke fear in her war against the browns, by just making stuff up. And Brewer’s uneasy relationship with the facts, has earned her the nomination for the top fool in Arizona. The Arizona Republic newspaper penned a scathing editorial on Tuesday, imploring Brewer “to get her facts straight.” And to please stop “making the state look foolish.”
Last week Brewer was making the false claim that the majority of illegal immigrants crossing the border into Arizona were “drug mules.” Her “drug mule” claim was such a whopper, that even Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), whom is engaging in nativist ranting about the “danged fence,” disagreed with her.
And before that, Brewer was using an amazing statistic to defend SB 1070, Arizona’s draconian anti-immigration law. She claimed that 87 percent of illegal immigrants crossing the border have criminal records. Well, when asked, her office couldn’t provide a source for such a wild claim. And federal immigration officials were unable to confirm it.
But if you think Brewer learned her lesson about making stuff up to fearmonger her constituents to gain their support for her anti-immigration efforts, think again. She was just getting warmed up.
During an appearance last month on Fox News’ “On the Record,” with Greta Van Susteren, Brewer declared that Arizona had a problem with illegal immigrants beheading people:
“We cannot afford all this illegal immigration and everything that comes with it, everything from the crime and the drugs and the kidnappings and the extortion and the beheadings and the fact that people can’t feel safe in their community,” she whined to Van Susteren, her new best friend. “It’s wrong! It’s wrong!”
When asked on a local news program about her beheading claims, Brewer dug down. “Our law enforcement agencies have found bodies in the desert either buried or just lying out there that have been beheaded,” she said. The show’s host told Brewer he was unable to find “any beheadings in any kind of news search.” But Brewer held firm.
Mass desert decapitations were news to The Arizona Guardian, so the paper did a little digging and found no instances of illegal immigrants beheading Arizonans. Not a one.
The Arizona Guardian interviewed the offices of six coroners in counties along the Mexican border. Not one of them has ever encountered a decapitation linked to an illegal immigrant. Not ever.
Although two human skulls were discovered in the desert in the past few years, the coroners said that doesn’t indicate the victims were decapitated.
So, Gov. Brewer, about that head cutting off thing…
Brewer’s spokesperson tried to shift blame for her false claim, by accusing the media of misinterpreting her remarks. “I’m not aware of any statements where the governor specifies where any crimes were committed,” he said.
And next week it will be something else.
