Anti-Gay Leader Outraged Gay Pride Parade ‘Hijacking’ July 4th With ‘Deviant Behavior’
July 3, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Phil Burress, a self-described former porn addict turned Christian fundamentalist crusader against pornography and the “gay agenda,” is warning families in Cincinnati, Ohio to stay clear of the “deviant” Gay Pride Parade taking place downtown on July 4. Burress, President of Citizens for Community Values, has issued an hysterical “action alert,” warning his membership of the danger of “homosexual activists” taking to the streets with their “deviant behavior” in a sinful celebration of “sexual appetite.”
Phil Burress has been peddling gay hate since the 90s, with an obsessive fervor that only a former porn addict can muster. In 1993, Burress launched a successful campaign to overturn city anti-discrimination protections for sexual orientation. And Burress was at the forefront of Ohio’s 2004 amendment banning gay marriage.
But thankfully, Cincinnati businesses and residents realized bigotry and discrimination was bad for the city’s reputation and for business. And the anti-gay ordinance was eliminated by voters in 2004. Since that time, an area coalition of business groups have embraced and supported LGBT sponsored events. But the local support given to the Cincinnati Equinox gay pride events, is about to cause resident homophobe Burress’ head to explode.
Burress’ “action alert” filled with bigoted hyperbole and fearmongering, declares “Homosexual Activists Hijack Independence Day.” And he is urging his followers to take action by writing letters of complaint to the corporate sponsors of the Gay Pride Parade:
“Homosexual activists have taken center stage in downtown Cincinnati’s July 4 celebration. Rather than have their pride parade in June as usual, they chose Independence Day to flaunt their sexual desires. (Click here to see their plans. Can you find anything patriotic?)”
“Instead of celebrating our Declaration of Independence, downtown Cincinnati will be celebrating sexual appetite. If you decide to go, please be forewarned that you may be exposed to deviant behavior. We are sad to see that these activities are sponsored by familiar names, including Macy’s, U.S. Bank, and Cincinnati-based Fifth Third Bank.”
And in a ridiculous “side note” Burress makes special mention of P&G and Kroger, accusing the two business of endorsing sexual deviancy. “Would P&G and Kroger allow their name to support a swingers or adulterers club? Whatever the title, it’s all about sexual cravings!”
But Burress’ colorful imagination doesn’t stop at swingers clubs and sexual cravings. During an interview with a local paper, he warned families planning to visit downtown Cincinnati on the 4th, to be on the lookout for gay parade attendees having sexual intercourse out in the open and topless lesbian women:
“We think its not right for them to invade the Fourth of July, and we’re trying to warn people that if they do go downtown they may be exposed to some deviant behavior,” Phil Burress, president of Citizens for Community Values. “Everything from sex in the streets to topless women,” said Burress.
Most residents of Cincinnati have grown used to the ex-porn addict’s extremist rhetoric and have learned to tune him out, especially members of the LGBT community.
Parade organizer George Crawford, says Burress’ warnings of wild, homosexual sexual in the streets doesn’t match the reality of the family-based and church-going LGBT community:
“I just think it shows he’s out of touch,” said parade chairman George Crawford. “Ninety-five percent of our parade entries are church organizations, student and university groups, political rights groups.”
Crawford points out that many gay couples have been in committed, stable relationships for many years.
“They never want to focus on the reality of the GLBT community and the couples who have been together for 10, 15, 20 years,” Crawford said. “I know couples who have been together for 42 years and go to church every Sunday and give their time to charity and work for the rights of the oppressed and have very strong family values.”
Phil Burress has been divorced twice and is on his third marriage, but he holds himself out as a proponent of family values, to deny gay couples the right to marry.
But the third time might just be the charm for Burress. He met his current wife at an anti-pornography conference. And she helpfully views X-rated materials for her husband, so he doesn’t become tempted.
“Mrs. Burress says she understands pornography’s destructive power and why her husband must abstain from any exposure to such materials. For that reason, she will watch the adult videos and read the adult magazines, then write summaries for her husband so he can speak to groups, lobby legislators or persuade prosecutors.”
Although Burress complains that a Gay Pride Parade is not patriotic, he is wrong. What better way to honor the Declaration of Independence, than with an event supporting equal rights for all American citizens?
