After 25 Years, Arrest Finally Made in Grim Sleeper Serial Murders
July 8, 2010
California (ChattahBox) – After twenty-five years of terrorizing the black community of L.A. County, a man who is believed to be the ‘Grim Sleeper’ serial killer has been arrested, after his son’s DNA was used to find him.
According to the LA Times, Lonnie David Franklin Jr. has been arrested by the LAPD, for the killing of at least 11 people, most of them black women.
The killings span over almost three decades, from 1985 – 1988, and then again, from 2002 – 2007. This jump in time between known killings was the cause of the name given by the media.
All victims were African American drug users or prostitutes, and all but one were female. The victims were sexually assaulted prior to being murdered.
A 12th victim, who is unnamed, was raped and shot, but managed to escape.
There has been evidence given over the years, including a witness on January 10, 1987, who called police from a payphone to say they witnessed the dumping of a body.
In that 911 call, the witness described a black male pulling the body of a woman from a 1976 blue and white Dodge van, with the license plate 1PZP746. It was later found abandoned.
The case was finally cracked when the son of the alleged suspect was arrested on unrelated charges. A DNA swab showed similarities to the sample taken from the bodies of the victims, and so a familial DNA test was conducted.
Those results led to the arrest of Franklin, which has shocked the local neighborhood, as the man in question is described as a friendly, caring father, mechanic, and community volunteer.
