Poll: Is Obama a Socialist? More Than Half of Likely Voters Think So
July 9, 2010
(ChattahBox)—It’s hard to know what to make of a new Democracy Corps poll showing that 55 percent of likely voters polled believe President Obama is a Socialist. Apparently, the right-wing tea party freak out over healthcare reform, with their constant attacks against Obama, as a Socialist, Communist, Marxist, Nazi and a host of other nonsensical invectives has made an impact on the public consciousness. What’s ironic is that Progressives are unhappy with Obama for not being liberal enough. But the Republican teapartiers are attacking the President as a wild-eyed radical Socialist. The reality is, Obama is a centrist at heart. So, why do a majority of voters believe the Fox News fueled nonsense? Reality and little things like empirical facts no longer matter in our political discourse, it seems.
The poll found that that 55 percent of likely voters believe the word “socialist” describes the president either “well” or “very well.”
Talking Points Memo asked Peyton Craighill, a senior associate at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, the pollster for Democracy Corps, to offer an explanation for the surprising results.
“It probably has to do with the fact that people are very unhappy with the dire economy and the fact that the budget deficit is quite large,” Craighill said. “People who don’t like the man are going to use any label they can to ding him, even if they don’t think he’s a socialist in the vein of the Soviet Union or China.”
Maybe, but people don’t seem to be doing any actual thinking of their own. The extremist Republican rhetoric and demagoguery that has now become commonplace, since Obama’s election has done a great disservice to our nation. And shame on them.
